Raised Garden Beds are Easy

Raised garden beds are easy to start and don’t require as much soil as you may think. Even though a raised bed not a necessity, raised beds can give some advantages over planting directly into the ground. My favorite benefit of a raised bed, is less bending over! Raised beds will also warm up quicker in the spring and have improved drainage. This will allow your plants roots to breathe and grow into a healthier plant. Starting with quality soil blends gives your garden a great head start. Raised beds also reduce pathway weeds from invading your plot reducing the extra weeding associated with direct sowing.

When starting your raised garden ensure the area gets enough hours of sunlight for the food you eat.

Raised Garden Construction

  • Create the template of your raised bed and remove the grass.
  • Place logs and sticks in the bottom. Not only does this reduce the amount of soil required to fill your bed, but over time it will break down and increase the nutrients available in the soil.
  • Place straw, bark and plant cuttings on top of the logs.
  • Add a layer of cardboard on top
  • Once your cardboard is placed , add a layer of peat moss
  • Then add layer of 4 way mix
  • These last two layers are not required, however they will ensure your garden bed has a abundance of nutrients.
  • Layer of potting soil
  • worm castings *It’s easy to make your own*

Raised garden beds are easy to create and easier to maintain than traditional gardening. You can create them using any available materials and reuse many different things , or you can purchase them in many different shapes and sizes to fit your available area.

Happy Gardening!!
