Herbs for your Chickens

Herbs for your chickens isn’t only about flavoring the meat. Adding herbs to your chickens diets is a very affordable and proactive way to take care of your flock. Almost all common herbs are a safe addition to your chicken’s diet. Luckily, herbs are a multipurpose plant when it comes to your chickens. Used for their nutritional value as well as their ability to keep bugs and rodents away from your coop. Here are my favorite 6:
Mint
Mint has very beneficial properties for any coop. Not only does it deter flies and rodents from your coop, but it also helps calm and destress your flock. In the summer mint can also be added to your chickens diet to help lower their body temperature,. Making those hot days easier on your chickens.
Garlic
Known for it’s antifungal and antibacterial properties, Garlic is a great choice to optimize your chickens health. Adding some powdered garlic to their feed or cloved garlic into their water is easy and effective. Not only does garlic help the immune system, but it also acts as a stimulant for egg layers. Ensure you remove the clove from the water after a day or so. You can also add cloves into the nesting boxes which helps encourage your hens to lay more.
Tumeric
Adding Tumeric to your feed is known to enhance growth rate and weight of broiler chickens. It also stimulates a chickens digestive system and egg production in laying hens. Tumeric is an ideal natural , non toxic food additive. There has yet to be any publication reporting a negative adverse effect from the addition of tumeric at moderate concentrations.
Thyme
Thyme is known to deter bugs that can bother your birds. Not only that ,but the antibiotic benefits will help aid in clearing any respiratory infections. The same antibacterial properties that are associated with helping dozens of illnesses. Adding some thyme in your laying boxes and in the run will help reduce bugs and other pests ,keeping your chickens happier and healthier.
Oregano
Oregano is a very strong natural anti biotic, anti bacterial as well as anti parasitic. Aides your chickens immune and respiratory systems just by adding it to their feed or hanging it in their coop. When oregano is ingested it benefits the intestinal tract, helping ward off Coccidiosis and Salmonella infections.
Basil
Being one of the most aromatic herbs basil is great for deterring pests like rodents and bugs. Basil, when ingested also aids in mucous membrane health and the respiratory system. Just add a little to their water or feed, you can even plant some in your run or keep a potted basil in the coop.
